Between the Door and the Street (about the homepage pic)

On October 19 2013, the artist Suzanne Lacy closed off an entire street in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. On each stoop, women (and a few men) wearing bright yellow scarves gathered to hold public conversations. The people on the stoops were mostly community activists and they held conversations on a diverse array of issues, including reproductive rights, global economics, poverty, and immigration, among others. Visitors to the project could stop and listen to the conversation, but not actively participate. Lacy called the piece, "Between the Door and the Street," referencing the in-between of private and public conversations, spaces, and activism.

I am thinking about this blog as a space between the door and the street too.  A place for intimate conversations and reflections that also invites public engagement.

  1. I find it very interesting that these people had meaningful conversations about world issues with an audience, i think it was constructive to allow the public to listen in but not "chime" in. They can leave with new ideas weighing on their minds and hopefully start another conversation, spreading new and meaningful ideas further.
